Thanksgiving break has come at just the right time. It’s hard trying to make progress on essays when working full-time, so a four day weekend when I don’t need to think about work at all is great for spending a few hours on cranking out drafts.
There have been a few distractions though. There are the in-laws and having to spend time with them. I don’t have a huge problem with them but my mother-in-law’s cooking ain’t so hot. Another distraction is cable television. My wife and I try to save money by not subscribing to cable tv. We also think we’d spend the majority of our non-working time in front of the tv if we had cable and that’s not how we want to live our lives. But her brother has cable tv and I’ve gotten hooked on Rob and Big on MTV.
What a great idea for a show. I like it because it’s a behind the scenes look at a close friendship of two guys who just like to have fun. I’m sure a lot of it is scripted but they come across as being very genuine. It’s a nice contrast to other shows on MTV like Real World that appeal to humanity’s most carnal appetites.
As someone who’s interested in media, it’s easy to see the potentially destructive nature of content that glorifies violence and sexual promiscuity. I don’t want to come across as a prude, but I think it is a valid question to consider whether content creators have a social responsibility to produce media that promotes positive values. I’m happy to see shows like Rob and Big that promote good values like friendship and racial unity while still being a lot of fun.
